Profile
Mr. Rowat holds a BSc in Engineering Chemistry and a PhD in chemistry, both from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Between 1988 and 2002 he was employed by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) where he served in the division for radioactive waste management at AECL’s Chalk River Laboratories. His work at Chalk River covered safety assessment for disposal of radioactive waste, remediation of contaminated sites and decommissioning planning for legacy nuclear facilities. In 2002 he joined the Waste and Environmental Safety Section of the IAEA. Since 2009 he has been head of the Decommissioning and Remediation Unit in that section. The work of the Decommissioning and Remediation Unit includes the development of international safety standards for NORM residues management.
