Steve Beckitt is an experienced Project Director and Chartered Chemical Engineer, having spent over 20 years in the nuclear industry. He gained his in-depth knowledge of nuclear plant operations as a Process Engineer in the fuel fabrication and reprocessing plants. He then moved into plant management to manage the fuel reprocessing plant operations for over 10 years. His background and extensive knowledge of the nuclear industry proved invaluable when he went on to manage the Dounreay Site Decommissioning projects, waste management facilities and site infrastructure. He was a key architect of the revised management structure and site arrangements for the effective, successful transition of the culture of the Dounreay site from operations to decommissioning. He is now the appointed Chief Nuclear Officer for DSRL and has oversight of all activities on the site.
He, with his teams, has an impressive track record safely decommissioning a complex portfolio of facilities in a short period of time. This has included the decommissioning of fuel production and processing plants, ponds, shielded cells, laboratories, criticality research facilities, reactors and final demolition of over 100 facilities.
He is currently a member of the Site Senior Executive and is a Director on the Dounreay Site Restoration Limited (DSRL) Board.
He is a founder member of the IAEA International Decommissioning Network (IDN) and represents the UK on the IDN Steering Committee.
He is an experienced and well respected Tier 1 Nuclear Site Manager, successfully managing multi-disciplined teams of staff and contractors in the decommissioning and waste management field.
