This technical presentation details the patented “MERLIN” Heat & Coat system and details how it facilitates simultaneous heat treatment and coating of field joints in the global offshore pipe-lay projects
The paper will demonstrate the use of precise, controlled, repeatable induction heat profiles, successfully developed and commissioned in numerous pipe-lay projects, and currently being used on major pipelay vessels for a range of multi diameter pipes and FJC specifications.
This system has been exclusive to a single operator until 2017, it is now openly available to the global offshore pipe-lay vessel owners and operators. Today with an ever increasing focus on pipeline installation efficiency, safety, economy and the need for repeatable and traceability of coating to specification this innovation provides lay vessel owners/operators and specialist oil and gas pipe laying contractors with the advantages to secure contracts and subsequently enhance their ability to lay pipe quickly - whilst improving field joint quality, reliability and providing a safe pipe processing environment upon the vessel and operators themselves.
The ‘Merlin Heat & Coat system offers pipe laying organisations the capability to simultaneously induction heat and powder coat field joints with a single piece of equipment, ensuring a reduced field joint processing time with repeatable and reliable coating capabilities – all culminating towards the ultimate goal of an increased pipe lay rate.
The key feature of simultaneous heating and coating, MERLIN’s patented interchangeable “cassette” design also allows for pipe diameters 8” – 26” and beyond and various field joint lengths to be processed using one system, this asset can be transferred/transported from vessel to vessel or pipelay project to pipelay project on the same vessel, regardless of pipe Diameter. Providing a ROI over several projects and several years usage, globally supported by an offshore service team fully accredited.
The system has already completed in several well documented and well publicised ‘S’ lay and ‘J’ lay projects. Now the success can be shared for all to benefit.
The Inductotherm Group, brand Radyne Offshore continue developments within pipeline systems offshore and onshore.
