Rob Buurman is director of Recycling Netwerk; an environmental NGO which promotes the best consumption and waste systems to reduce material consumption and its negative impacts. Recycling Netwerk is known in the Netherlands for its successful campaign against the abolition of deposits on large plastic PET-bottles and supports the expansion of the system to smaller bottles and cans. Since 2017 Recycling Netwerk focuses its activities both on the Netherlands and Belgium.
Rob is an expert in waste management and circular economy. He believes that a shift of responsibilities and costs are necessary to counter the negative effects of products and packagings. Right now society pays for the negative impact of plastic pollution. A well-developed producer responsibility system internalizes the environmental costs in the system of the product.
Before working for Recycling Netwerk, Rob worked in Brussels as a policy officer Circular Economy for the Flemish federation for environmental NGOs. Rob has degrees in aeronautical engineering (Ing.) and Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society (MSc).
