Phil McNamara graduated from Sheffield Polytechnic with an Honours Degree in Applied Chemistry. He spent three years in the NHS in a biochemistry laboratory before joining the CEGB as a radiochemist at their Gravesend, Kent laboratories in 1988. In 1990 he moved to Hartlepool Power Station as a Health Physics Engineer and worked in operational health physics, radwaste and discharges and radioactive material transport. In 2001 he moved to British Energy’s Barnwood, Gloucester offices initially in Radwaste and Decommissioning, but latterly as a Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser in the Safety and Technical Division.
Phil represents EDF Energy at the nuclear industry Radioactive Materials Transport Users Committee (RAMTUC) and the RADSAFE emergency scheme working group. He acts as Training Lead for both RAMTUC and RADSAFE and submitted a chapter on training requirements for the transport of Radioactive Material in the publication ‘Safe and Secure Transport and Storage of Radioactive Materials (Woodhead Publishing 2015). He has written two papers on RAM transport for international conferences and chaired the 2007 IBC conference on RAM transport. His paper on issues with consigning excepted packages (Excepted Packages – Consignors Friend or Pandora’s Box!) led to TCSC publishing a Code of Practice on Excepted Package consignment requirements, which Phil co-authored.
