Eddie Punch is the secretary general of the Irish Cattle & Sheep Farmers’ Association which represents cattle and sheep sectors in Ireland. He has over twenty years’ experience in lobbying for the sector in Ireland and in Brussels and has contributed at debates in the European parliament and at other EU institutions and conferences. He has a particular interest in the contribution of biofuels to the agriculture sector in Europe and has been an outspoken critic of EU Commission proposals to seriously curtail crop based biofuels under the Renewable Energy Directive.
He has served on many Irish government consultative committees such as the National Economic and Social Council, the Department of Agriculture Brexit consultative committee and various CAP reform committees. He has also worked in Botswana to help improve the capacity of farm organisations to engage with government and agri-business. He currently also serves as a director of a livestock mart in Co Clare, Ireland. In addition, he manages a farm in the west of Ireland which is home to a Limousin and Charolais suckler herd.
Previously he worked in companies which delivered the EU LEADER programme. A graduate of Politics and Economics from the University of Limerick where he also worked in the Department of Sociology as a tutor on dependent development, he served on the University’s academic council. He manages a family farm in the west of Ireland
