Director, Sustainable Fuel Technologies at Boeing Research & Technology Europe
Olivier Rolland recently joined The Boeing Company (September 2017) as Director, Sustainable Fuel Technologies, in Europe where he leads the corresponding activities, supporting Boeing global efforts to accelerate time-to-market of sustainable aviation fuels. Olivier has a Ph.D. in chemistry which he achieved while working at Rhodia (now Solvay - France) in collaboration with the CNRS (France): he investigated the synthesis and structure-property relationships of specific anticancer and anti-inflammatory agents. In 2007, he joined Michelin (France) where he led technology polymerization projects to produce synthetic rubber improving tire performances such as fuel efficiency. He also started Michelin biotechnology activities focusing on bio-sourcing monomers. In 2010, he became part of Total (New Energy Division - France) where he led the development of industrial biotechnology to produce molecules that could substitute petroleum-sourced ones. After the implementation of an open-innovation network, he relocated to the US in 2013 to manage the partnership and programs between Total and Amyris, a California based synthetic biology start-up, dedicated to developing new technologies to produce biofuels from renewable raw materials. In particular, he led the development of the first commercial sugar-based aviation fuel produced from fermentation that has been used notably by Air France and Cathay Pacific.
