Afonso is a Senior Administrator at the European Court of Auditors (ECA), the EU’s external auditor. As a long-time auditor, he has conducted financial and performance audits in the areas of responsibility of the Court’s Chambers I (Sustainable use of natural resources) and II (Investment for cohesion, growth and inclusion), with a particular focus on EU-funded investments in the field of transport. Recent audits include the Special Report 05/2021 on Infrastructure for charging electric vehicles; and Special Report 15/2023 on the EU’s industrial policy on batteries. Afonso holds a degree in Economics from the University of Porto and previously worked in the private audit firm Deloitte in Portugal.
